During our Sunday School, the children of St. Paul's come together for Godly Play. This Montessori‑inspired approach to children’s spiritual formation, developed by Rev. Jerome Berryman, invites young people to wonder, explore, and discover God’s presence in their lives. Rooted in the core stories and liturgical practices of the Christian tradition, Godly Play uses beautifully hand-crafted materials, quiet space, and intentional storytelling to help children enter into scripture with imagination and curiosity.
In a Godly Play room, children hear sacred stories, respond with art or play, and share their own wondering questions—learning that faith is something they can explore deeply and personally. Rather than memorizing answers, children practice listening, wondering, and making meaning, guided by trained storytellers who create a safe, gentle environment for spiritual growth.
Godly Play helps children:
-
Experience the stories of our faith in a hands‑on, developmentally appropriate way
-
Build a language of Christian symbols, practices, and community
-
Learn to ask big questions and trust their own spiritual insight
-
Grow in confidence, compassion, and a sense of belonging in the church
At St. Paul's, Godly Play is offered as part of our children’s formation ministry, welcoming all children into a space where they can encounter God with openness, joy, and wonder.
